Job Description
The Position

We advance science so that we all have more time with the people we love.

The Molecular Biology Department is seeking a talented and motivated Scientist 3 to assist with the development and optimization of mRNA-based therapeutics. The candidate will be responsible for the design, generation, and distribution of nucleic acid-based reagents to support pre-clinical efforts.

The Opportunity:

Your core responsibility will be to develop and evaluate novel linear and circRNA formats. You will also design and execute improved RNA production protocols and develop new methods for producing RNA, yielding material for downstream in vitro assays and in vivo studies. In addition, you will design and execute cell-based experiments to gain mechanistic insight into RNA biology and function and subsequently advance the field via publication of high-impact scientific papers.

Who you are:

  • Completed a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Genetics, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Genome Engineering, Cell/Gene Therapy, or a related field.

  • Postdoctoral training or 3+ years of relevant experience in an industry setting. Equal ability to work independently or within a collaborative structure to advance time-sensitive projects.

  • You have a demonstrated track record in RNA biology, including parameters that influence tissue-specific translation, immune stimulation, stability, and/or trafficking.

  • You have expertise in RNA biochemistry, nucleic acid chemistry, in vitro synthesis, quality control of mRNA, and molecular biology (PCR, expression plasmid design and manipulation, etc.).

  • You have experience with in vitro and cell-based experiments for engineering RNA with durable, tissue-specific expression.

  • You have a strong background in linear and/or circRNA production and optimization including optimizing IVTs, purifications (both chromatography and high-throughput based methodologies) and analytical method development.

  • You work effectively in both independent and team-focused research environments.

  • Meticulous record keeping and organizational skills are critical, as is the ability to communicate effectively across multi-functional groups at Genentech and with our external collaborators.

Preferred:

  • You have proficiency with molecular biology/data analysis software and ELNs (SnapGene, Ape, DNAStar, Benchling, etc.)

  • You have demonstrated a sustained record of productivity as evidenced by high-impact publications, patents, and/or external presentations.
